Auch bei Ihrem vierbeinigen Freund sollten Sie sich um die Zahnpflege Gedanken machen.

Wir putzen uns täglich die Zähne. Und wie ist es mit dem besten Freund des Menschen? Auch bei Ihrem Hund ist es wichtig, die Zähne gesund zu halten! Schlechte Zähne können Schmerzen verursachen und sind krankheitsfördernd.

Ob Ihr Hund Probleme mit seinem Gebiss hat, ist anhand von gelblich-bräunlichen Verfärbungen ersichtlich. Auch Mundgeruch ist ein Indiz dafür. Wenn es bereits so weit gekommen ist, kann beim Tierarzt eine Zahnstein-OP durchgeführt werden, bei der der Belag entfernt wird. Dieser Eingriff ist nicht ganz billig und muss außerdem unter Vollnarkose durchgeführt werden, daher sollten Sie diesen äußersten Fall vermeiden!

Am besten ist es, sich von Anfang an um die Zahnpflege zu kümmern und den Hund bereits als Welpen daran zu gewöhnen. Wenn Sie einem ausgewachsenen Bernhardiner plötzlich mit einer Zahnbürste zu Leibe rücken wollen, werden Sie keinen Erfolg haben.

Nicht alle Hunde sind anfällig für Zahnprobleme, aber manche Rassen tendieren besonders dazu, Terrier zum Beispiel.

Der Grund dafür, dass Hunde schlechte Zähne bekommen, ist meistens die Art der Nahrung. Hundefutter hat oft eine relativ weiche Konsistenz und bleibt zwischen den Zähnen hängen. Um dem entgegenzuwirken, gibt es spezielle Leckerlis, teilweise sogar in Zahnbürstenform, die relativ hart sind, und an denen der Hund beim Fressen seine Zähne und damit Belag abreibt. Zusätzlich gibt es auch Spielzeug, das nach einem ähnlichen Prinzip funktioniert.

Wenn Ihr Hund eine Tendenz zu Zahnproblemen hat, ist es ratsam, ihm die Zähne direkt zu putzen. Es gibt spezielle Hundezahnbürsten zu kaufen, aber auch normale Zahnbürsten eignen sich dafür. Bei kleinen Hunden können Sie zu einer Babyzahnbürste greifen, aber generell ist vor allem wichtig, dass die Borsten nicht zu hart sind, damit keine Verletzungen im Zahnfleischbereich auftreten können.

Stoßen Sie den Hund dabei nicht vor den Kopf! Lassen Sie ihn erst einmal daran schnuppern, reiben Sie nicht zu kräftig beim Putzen. Es ist besser, Sie putzen öfter mal nur ein wenig, als ihn zu überfordern. Wenn Sie wirklich gar nicht zurechtkommen, gibt es auch Zahnpasta etwa mit Hühnergeschmack zu kaufen.
